Targeting Respondents in Puerto Rico (US) Surveys

Prev Next

When setting up geographic profiling for a United States survey, it is important to choose the correct location qualification if you intend to include, or exclude, respondents from Puerto Rico.

Region, Division, and DMA exclusions

Standard US geographic classifications — Region (the 4 US Census regions), Division, and DMA (Designated Market Area) do not include Puerto Rico. If you target respondents using Region, Division, or DMA, any incoming respondents from Puerto Rico will automatically fail the qualification and terminate.

How to include Puerto Rico in your sample

If your buyer or study needs to recruit respondents from Puerto Rico, use one of the following qualifications instead:

  1. State qualification – Add the State qualification to your survey and select Puerto Rico from the state options list.

  2. MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) – Add the MSA qualification and select the relevant Puerto Rico MSA option(s).

IMPORTANT: When running a nationwide US study where Puerto Rico should be eligible, don't rely solely on the 4-Region qualification. Explicitly add Puerto Rico via State or MSA targeting alongside your main Region selection, or respondents from Puerto Rico will terminate even though the study is intended to be nationwide.
